Today I was talking with a young actress who told me she had one parent who completely supported her acting career and one parent who in one sentence could send her self esteem and dreams careening into the depths of despair.

The saddest part about it was she was the most AFFECTED by the parent who discouraged her and that caused her to stop taking action for her career.

I asked her “do you realize you have a choice of who to listen to?”

Her face lit up.

The idea that she had a CHOICE in the matter was news to her.

“You mean I could just say ‘Dad, I’m sorry you feel that way. I love you.’ And then go for a walk?

Yup.

Yes, you can do that.

You are an adult. You have the power to leave. To not listen. To create an imaginary bubble around yourself that protects you from other people’s negativity towards you and your dream.

And this goes deeper still.

Who are you listening to advise you on that thing that is the most precious to you?

Your career.

Are you listening to someone who has the career you want?

Are you listening to someone who is successful?

Are you listening to someone who is recommended by Top Agents and Casting Directors?

If not, you are listening to the voice that can send your career and worse, your dream – into the depths of despair.

Helen Keller said “One cannot consent to creep, when one has the impulse to soar.”

I love that and I have a passion to help actors to SOAR.

In my Free MP3, THE TOP FIVE MISTAKES THAT ARE KILLING YOUR ACTING CAREER, I discuss the mistake of listening to the wrong people, plus four other very valuable lessons.
